Besides being located in the mountains, another unique feature is that there are many hands-on exhibits. Like the giraffes, for example. We were able to feed and pet them. It was amazing!
Audrey feeding a giraffe a cracker. Check out its tongue!
This carousel that the girls are riding in the following pictures is only 1 of 3 in the United States. It is 100 years old and was designed to be taken to fairs. The music (as well as the faces of the horses) were a little creepy. However, being able to ride a piece of history (so to speak) was pretty cool!
Here is just a glimpse of the animal pictures Steven took. I am sharing the cat ones because they are my favorite.
This Tiger's name is Hilga and we were able to watch her eat lunch.
That is an African Bullfrog Audrey is looking at. I was fascinated by it! It can grow to be as big as a dinner plate, but even more amazing is the fact that they are very protective of their tadpoles and will even chase away young lions! What a dad!!
Even though she is smiling, she didn't want her picture taken with those crocodiles. She doesn't like them. But, can you blame her?
Another hands-on exhibit were the Budgies. That is the type of bird I am holding. He is eating seeds off of the popsicle stick in my hand.
There were birds everywhere. In fact, it was a little unnerving like a scene from the movie, The Birds. Here is Madeleine trying to pet one. Doesn't it look like she is trying not to get caught?
I laughed so hard the first time I saw this picture! This is a ground squirrel that was running free around the zoo. Somehow, Steven managed to get an amazingly
cute picture of it.
Finally, at the end of the day, the girls got their faces painted. Madeleine is a tiger named Hilga and Audrey is a nameless Snow Leopard.
Coming up tomorrow are pictures from my favorite day of the trip; the day we visited The Garden of the Gods and rode the cog up Pikes Peak!! The pictures are amazing! To be
continued . . .
