During some of the events of the past week (Madeleine's accident then subsequent stomach bug & multiple plumbing issues in our home that have occupied mine and Steven's time), it seems that Audrey has fallen through the cracks. You wouldn't know it to look at her because she does a beautiful job of keeping herself occupied. Her favorite pastime is playing in her dollhouse; something that keeps her engaged for hours. Today, she did just that as her playmate was bedridden all day. Madeleine complained of a stomach ache during the night and eventually threw up this morning. Thankfully she only threw up one time, but she took it easy all day leaving Audrey to play alone in her doll house.
The weather was gorgeous today with temps in the 70's (almost chilly compared to the 100's we had weeks ago). As a matter of fact, I opened all of our windows and lit a lilac scented candle to bring the fresh air indoors. When Steven got home from work he had the brilliant idea for me to take Audrey on a walk. Our walk turned into a walk to the park. As much as I wished Madeleine could join us, it was nice having some one on one time with Audrey & it was evident by her continuous chatter that she enjoyed it too.
Her rapid talking was so adorable that I started jotting it all down in e-mail messages to myself from my phone so I could properly document it later. I probably should have done a better job of engaging in the conversation, but I simply couldn't resist.
From the get go she saw red chalk (or something similar) on the sidewalk which reminded her of blood. This lead her to think of dead squirrels in the road. Then she declared, "Some people hit squirrels with their cars, but we don't hit squirrels". Then the wheels in her head started turning as she said, "Dying is a part of life". (It just so happened as she said the last statement, one of our neighbors appeared behind us. She must have found that statement peculiar coming from a small child). Then she concluded her statement by saying, "but God gave us a long life".
Then, just as abruptly as the first conversation began, she looked up and saw the sun as it started to set which reminded her of sunglasses. This caused her to take notice of the fact that I had my glasses on. "Why didn't you wear your contacts? Do you not like them"? Then out of no where the following dialogue resulted:
Audrey: "Knock Knock"!
Me: "Who's there"?
Audrey: "Twizzly"
Me: "Twizzly who"?
Audrey: "Twizzly lady gong gong"!!!
Then roars of laughter ensued.
She talked all the way to the park and just before we arrived she said with a big smile on her face, "Isn't it cool that you can't see God but you can see what He made. I learned that from you".
Audrey may have needed some one on one time and a chance to be heard, but not as much as I desperately needed to hear what she had to say.
